How does self-adhesive wallpaper work?

In principle, self-adhesive wallpaper works like a sticker or label that you can stick on the wall web by web. Unlike a wall tattoo, which usually consists of only one element and is often partially transparent, self-adhesive wallpaper consists of several parts and can be stuck together as often as you like. This means that the entire wall, from ceiling to floor, can be given a new look.
You can find out exactly what to look out for when wallpapering with self-adhesive wallpaper and how to apply it to the wall quickly and easily in the section "Wallpapering with self-adhesive wallpaper".
The adhesive underside of self-adhesive wallpaper is intended for smooth, dry and clean surfaces, including not only walls but also doors, shelves or cupboards. The adhesive coating is protected by a sturdy film that can simply be peeled off the back of the wallpaper during application. The adhesive film on the back of the wallpaper is applied over a wide area and adheres very well even after position correction.
The wallpaper can be easily removed again without leaving any residue, the pasted-over surface is not damaged in the process, and the adhesive does not attack the substrate. This makes self-adhesive wallpaper ideal for temporary renovations, for example in a rented flat.

Wallpaper without paste?

Self-adhesive wallpaper adheres to the wall by means of an adhesive film on the back. The classic paste for paper or non-woven wallpaper is not needed here. This not only saves money, but also time. The so-called "peel & stick" wallpapers with adhesive backing are simply pressed onto the wall, creating a new wall with a trendy design, panel by panel.
By the way, there is not only a convenient alternative for classic wallpapers that saves pasting, self-adhesive borders and trims also beautify the wall.
The application is as easy as sticking on a large sticker, remove the backing from the protective film and press onto the surface. You can find detailed instructions with a video under "Wallpapering with self-adhesive wallpaper".
Self-adhesive wallpaper without paste should not be confused with pre-glued wallpaper. While self-adhesive wallpapers can be removed again due to the glue on the underside, pre-glued wallpapers have to be processed differently and cannot be removed without leaving residues. When buying wallpaper, make sure you know exactly what type of wallpaper you are buying.

How do you recognise self-adhesive wallpaper?

Unlike ordinary wallpaper, there is no official symbol for self-adhesive wallpaper or borders. However, the articles are clearly marked on the packaging and in our online shop. Either in the product name or in the material notes. The term "self-adhesive" is seen about as often as the English "peel & stick", which literally means peel and stick.
All items labelled in this way can therefore be stuck to the wall without paste. Depending on the format, there are different names for the self-adhesive articles, including:
Self-adhesive wallpaper, they can be bought in rolls. The standard format has a width of 0.53m and a length of 8.40m. This means that three strips of each roll can be stuck to the wall, even with pattern offsets. With the right number, an entire wall or the entire room can be redecorated.
Self-adhesive panels, are large stickers with a standard format of 0.35m wide and 2.50m long. A self-adhesive motif panel makes a statement on the wall and is generally applied individually rather than in a row. However, there are no limits to your creativity.
Self-adhesive borders or trims are narrow decorative strips that are stuck onto the wall as an accent. One roll is 5 m long, the width of the borders varies from a narrow 5 cm to 26 cm. Self-adhesive borders are particularly popular in children's rooms, with many colourful patterns and designs.
If you don't want to use paste at all, simply use the "Material" search filter when searching for wallpaper on new-walls.com and filter for self-adhesive. This way, you will only be shown items that can be easily glued to the wall.

Wallpapering with self-adhesive wallpaper

You can find out how to apply self-adhesive wallpaper quickly and safely here and in our video. There are tips and tricks for the best procedure and a seamlessly beautiful result.

The wallpaper is applied to the wall in four quick steps

1) Check the surface and cut the wallpaper to size.
2) Remove the protective film at the top
3) Remove the protective film and press the wallpaper on from top to bottom.
4) Align the second strip of wallpaper and stick it seamlessly to the first strip.

1) Check the surface and cut the wallpaper to size
Before you stick the wallpaper on the wall, you should check the surface. It must be smooth, dry and even, only then will the wallpaper adhere properly. You can find out exactly which substrates are suitable for self-adhesive wallpaper and where else you can apply it in the next section "Substrates for self-adhesive wallpaper".
For easy handling, you should cut the wallpaper to the correct length. Measure the height of the wall and add an overhang of about 3 - 5 cm. The overhang helps to align the pattern and compensates for slopes.
Tip: Draw a vertical guide line on the wall, which you can then stick the wallpaper along and ensure that the pattern runs evenly. Especially in old buildings and with walls that are not at right angles, the guide line is important for aligning the design of the wallpaper.

2) Remove the protective film at the top.
Remove the first centimetres of the protective film on the back at the top of the first strip, then align the strip vertically on the wall. Then you can press on the first section of wallpaper. Leave about half of the overhang protruding over the corner. If the wallpaper does not stick exactly, you should loosen it again and realign it.
Tip: When pressing on the wallpaper, you can first use a flat, clean hand to hold it in place. Only when the strip has stuck straight should you use a wallpaper brush or a pressing spatula. Work out air pockets towards the edge.
3) Remove the protective film and press on the wallpaper from top to bottom.
Once the wallpaper is aligned and securely fixed at the top. You can completely peel off the remaining film from the back of the wallpaper. Then press the sheet firmly against the wall and work out any air bubbles towards the edge. Work evenly and with little pressure.
Tip: When removing the protective film, work with both arms, left and right of the wallpaper strip. Working in a team makes wallpapering and pasting easier; while one person pulls off the film, the other can press the strip evenly against the wall.
4) Align the second strip of wallpaper and glue it seamlessly to the first strip.
Cut the second strip, but pay attention to the pattern offset. You will find information about the pattern repeat and offset for the wallpaper on the product insert. You can also check the offset before cutting by holding the previous strip.
Now glue the second strip butt to butt with the first strip of wallpaper, making sure that the pattern is continuous.
Tip: To create a seamless picture on the wall, press down the transitions between the strips with the press-on spatula. Look at the wall at an angle to detect air pockets and unevenness.

What does the wallpaper adhere to? - The right substrate for self-adhesive wallpaper

Self-adhesive wallpaper is suitable for smooth, dry, clean and stable surfaces. You should check your wall for all these factors in advance by simply visually inspecting and feeling the wall. If you can already visually or by feeling with your hand detect unevenness such as cracks, holes or a plaster structure, the substrate must be levelled and treated beforehand. If the wall feels damp or sandy, the surface must first be sealed before applying the self-adhesive wallpaper.
It is possible to paste over woodchip wallpaper or plaster, but this will not provide a secure hold or an even picture. Even on untreated bricks and non-stick surfaces, the adhesive of the wallpaper cannot find a hold.
However, self-adhesive wallpaper can not only work on the right wall, it can also be stuck to smooth furniture surfaces, for example a cupboard or shelf. Doors can also be wallpapered with self-adhesive wallpaper. If the surface is right, there are no limits to your imagination.

Glued? No problem with self-adhesive wallpaper

The wallpaper strip is not in the loht and runs diagonally or the attachment is wrong? Don't worry, self-adhesive wallpaper is easy to remove from the wall again without damaging the wallpaper itself or the surface. By carefully peeling the wallpaper off at a flat angle to the wall, you can remove it from the surface. It is important to keep the tension even and low. Removing the wallpaper works best when the wallpaper is taut and you work with a little tension.
Tip: Use both hands in parallel when pulling the whole strip. Work from the top down, so you have more control. If you want to reattach the wallpaper, make sure that the back of the strip does not collapse and stick together. If this happens, you must first carefully separate the folded areas.

Self-adhesive wallpaper not only for the wall

As you may have already read, self-adhesive wallpaper is not only for walls. Most smooth surfaces can be decorated with such wallpaper.
A popular option is to cover cupboards or shelves with self-adhesive wallpaper, which can be used like furniture foil to turn boring furniture into patterned eye-catchers. In contrast to furniture foil, which usually sticks permanently, self-adhesive wallpaper can be easily removed or replaced. In this way, you can always give your furniture a new design.
Interior doors are just as likely to be covered with wallpaper. In this way, a door disappears visually into the wall and no longer catches the eye of a passing observer. But you can also achieve the opposite effect with self-adhesive wallpaper on the passage door. If the wall itself is kept neutral, the decorated door immediately catches the eye.
You can also apply opaque wallpaper to interior windows or partitions and choose a different design on each side of the glass. You can certainly think of other ways to use self-adhesive wallpaper creatively.
If you are not sure whether a surface is non-stick, use a test strip to check the durability before applying the sheets. And be aware that high humidity, e.g. in the bathroom, can affect the bond between paste and surface.

Renovate and remove self-adhesive wallpaper?

If you want to renovate your room quickly and easily, self-adhesive wallpaper is the right choice. In addition to the quick application, the easy removal of the wallpaper is also particularly practical. If you want to change the wallpaper with new motifs or if you have to hand over the flat in its original condition when you move out, then self-adhesive wallpaper is the best way to do it.
Easy to apply, with few tools and no prior knowledge, and a beautiful result that can be easily undone if necessary. This is exactly why "Peel & Stick" wallpapers are on the rise among wallpapers. With our video instructions and tips on gluing and peeling, renovating is quick and easy.
When renovating with self-adhesive wallpaper, it is important to know how to align and adjust its fit. You will find more information on this in the section "Glued? No problem with self-adhesive wallpaper" for more detailed information. When you replace the wallpaper, it is enough to peel it off the surface to expose a surface that can be wallpapered. Now you can stick on a new wallpaper, paint the surface or apply a classic non-woven wallpaper.
By the way, you can dispose of the old "peel & stick" or self-adhesive wallpaper in the normal household waste. The old wallpaper belongs in the grey residual waste bin.

Trend design for self-adhesive wallpaper

Our wallpapers with self-adhesive backing are not only practical, their decorative front makes them an eye-catcher on the wall. The patterns and designs have already become favourites for home wall design as normal wallpaper and now embellish the home as "Peel & Stick" wallpaper.
Instead of old-fashioned patterns, you'll find 3D looks here that look deceptively real like a brick wall or a quarry stone wall. Stone looks in rustic style are ideal for kitchens, living rooms or a highlight wall in the bedroom. The rustic and natural look is also an eye-catcher in the home office or in a guest room and can be combined in many ways to suit individual styles.
The detailed structure designs including realistic shading give the wall an exciting texture. Plaster and concrete looks as well as rusty metal designs create an industrial and timeless look. The neutral colours of these self-adhesive wallpapers add colour and atmosphere to a room in a restrained way, they can be combined in many ways and set the scene for furniture and accent colours.

Natural designs are also among the favourites. From romantic rose blossoms in photo-realistic style to jungle thickets in lush green. Nature lovers will also find the right motif among the "Peel & Stick" wallpapers.

The floral variety is not only available in photography style, but also as abstract patterns, in drawing style or graphic look.

Patterns and graphic decors are among the classic wallpaper designs, which is why they must not be missing from self-adhesive wallpapers. Geometric patterns and filigree line designs are particularly in demand right now. These wallpapers give your living room structure and can be combined in a timeless way. Retro vibes in the living room with a metallic line pattern or geometric designs for a harmonious picture in the bedroom, you decide. Friends of the Scandinavian style will feel just as comfortable with the designs as minimalists.

Wallpapers for the kitchen have also been thought of. Graphic designs for the dining room, kitchen and breakfast nook create either a diner atmosphere or a café mood. The chalkboard look, with a fancy menu and curved fonts, makes a statement on the wall with black and white contrast. American diner décor and rustic brick walls create a timeless look with international flair.

But which design you choose is up to you. Floral patterns and natural leaf motifs also fit into a country house kitchen, vintage patterns fit into a retro kitchen and modern interiors go well with subtle structures such as plaster or concrete looks.
