Where are decorative cushions used?

Decorative cushions for the living room

With decorative cushions, we always think of the living room first. Of course, sofa cushions and couch cushions are a given in the living room. As decorative cushions, they give the room the special touch that you want. This is particularly true if the living room is a living room/dining room, as the cushions may be in view when eating. And who wants to see an unadorned sofa?

However, they are also indispensable as functional cushions in the living room. With firm cushion filling, they support the back or as a special neck cushion – exactly – they support the neck. You’ll enjoy a well-earned rest at the end of the day, or you can get really comfortable for a series binge-watching session with friends. Put briefly: Without decorative cushions, your living room is not complete.

Decorative cushions for the bedroom

Hang on, decorative cushions in the bedroom? Why not? The hotels of this world have shown us how. They’re used when the classic pillow retires to bed. Boho cushions make the bed stylish and eye-catching, creating a seductive pile of cushions.

In combination with a matching bedspread or a chic quilt, you can create a seventh heaven in your bed for cuddling, reading and dreaming. And if that isn’t enough: on the windowsill, on ledges and chairs, scatter cushions give the bedroom a very individual feel-good atmosphere.

Decorative cushions in the hallway and corridor

The door opens and you feel at home – decorative cushions can contribute to making this feeling even more appealing. They transform the entrance area, giving you a warm and very personal welcome. Arranged, for example, on chairs, on the floor, in pretty baskets or rustic boxes, you can create your very own special finishing touch. And your guests will feel even more warmly welcomed with lovely scatter cushions.

Decorative cushions for children and in the children’s room

For children, decorative cushions always have several functions. They give the room flair and a cosy feeling too. Children will also use them for playing, to decorate their fantasy worlds, and they are also very suitable to build castles and caves. Cosy cuddle cushions, of course, are wonderful to snuggle into. Or you can simply fall asleep on them after exhausting adventures.

What is the best way to decorate cushions?

Cushions will make your family couch lovely and cosy and comfortable. But there’s no obligation to put them on the sofa. Your cushions can also look lovely in baskets, on shelves or on your dining room chairs.

Cushions are always a good decoration idea, because it doesn’t matter what colour your walls, wallpaper or furniture are, cushions can always be swapped and replaced with other colours.

Dare to use more colour to create accents in your living room, bedroom or children’s rooms.

Blue decorative cushions

Decorative cushions, explained in simple terms

Decorative cushions are a wonderful way to give your four walls an individual look. It’s quick and comparatively cost-effective too. Decorative cushions add a feature, are an eye-catching element of the decor, can loosen up austere shapes, enhance harmony and make your home cosy – depending on the style and type of decorative cushion you choose and what exactly you do with it.

So that you don’t get mixed up with all the different terms, here’s a quick explanation of the most important designations:

Decorative cushions are all cushions whose primary function is decorative. So, for example, pillows in your bedroom or seating cushions for chairs don’t fall under this category. However, that doesn’t mean that decorative cushions don’t have any practical uses. You can use them to support your back, for example, but also as a well-upholstered seating cushion.

Scatter cushions give the decorative effect an even greater impact. They might feature special materials, unusual shapes and sizes, particularly interesting motifs or embroidery and appliqués. Put briefly: scatter cushions are so beautiful that you won’t want to do anything with them other than simply look at them.

Sofa cushions, as the name suggests, can be found on the sofa. That is, decorative cushions become sofa cushions just by putting them there. You can arrange them on the bed or anywhere else just as well. Not only that: sofa cushions love company. For a medium-sized sofa, five cushions are ideal, and a large corner sofa can also take seven sofa cushions.

Boho cushions are unconventional, dazzling, sumptuous and informal. So actually quite contradictory. This has always fascinated artists and hippies. No wonder: Boho is the abbreviation of ‘Bohemian’ or ‘Bohème’ and the word originally referred to vagabond people. In boho style, what remains is informality and non-conformism. This means that with boho cushions you can drift into the day with wonderful dreams.

Cushion covers, also known as cushion cases, are the outer garment of decorative cushions. At tapetenshop.de, you will only find high-quality cushion covers for decorative cushions, equipped with a solid, sewn-in zip. This means that it is quick and cost-effective to change your look, for example, for special occasions such as Christmas or Valentine’s Day.

Cushion fillings, also called filling cushions or ticking, give life to the decorative cushions from the inside. With us, you can choose between cushion fillings made from polyester or feathers. With two size choices in 40x40 and 50x50 cm, you can fill all of your cushion covers perfectly. The 50x50 cm inlet fits the 45x45 cm cushion covers. This will give you a really plump cushion with presence.

How do I use decorative cushions in my interior design?

Your home is an expression of your personality. Decorative cushions are an outstanding way to emphasise that, quickly and at low cost. And your home also has a practical function for your body. At home, you should experience an all-round sense of well-being. You should, therefore, take these two aspects – practicality and decoration – into account when choosing your decorative cushions.

Decorative cushions can be really practical

If your primary concern is practicality, pay attention to the role that a decorative cushion should play for you. For example, if you want it to support you when sitting, a firmer filling is the better choice. If you are using a cushion on a chair, then it should cover the entire seat area.

It may be the case that one single decorative cushion is not enough to provide you with a more stable seating position on the sofa. Here, cushions of various sizes can help you to find the ideal support. If you want to support your neck when you are sitting or lying down, a special neck cushion will be best. Intricate embroidery on decorative cushions may irritate you and add pressure in the wrong places.

Highly decorative cushions

Is the decorative aspect more important than the function? Then the choice of style is important to you. Take a look at what else you like, how you dress and what your interior design is like.

If your style is more subtle and reserved, plain cushion covers are best. This doesn’t have to be boring. The best example is the all-white trend, where everything is in shades of white. Add some black cushions to the white decorative cushions to create visual excitement.

Or would you prefer a more striking look? In that case, coloured and patterned decorative cushions are the right choice, for example, boho cushions for the right bohemian style. If you aren’t sure, then simply try out several options. With our great value cushion covers, you can create a new look in the blink of an eye.

Decorative cushions for special occasions

Of course, your style is always in season. But for certain occasions, you can give your four walls the flair you need with the right decorative cushions. Green and red for Christmas? Your wedding day all in white? Easter in technicolor or with our lovely cherry blossom cushions? Take a look and find inspiration.

How do I decorate using decorative cushions?

Do you want a quick and skilful change of style? This is simple and cost-effective with decorative cushions – if you stick to these five steps.

Step 1: Determine the colour scheme

If you aren’t trying to achieve a topsy-turvy look, choose a maximum of three colour tones for your decorative cushions. The colours should harmonise with one another and also pop up in other elements of the room, for example, in the wallpaper, the floor covering or the furniture. Very important: The cushion colour should not clash with the colour of the furniture where it is intended to sit. A bright pink cushion on a reddish-brown sofa is daring, to say the least.

Step 2: Choose your pattern and material

You have your colours, now it’s time to look at textures and patterns for the decorative cushions. Here it’s also advisable to make sure that your interior design matches them. Decorative cushions with a soft surface exude warmth and cosiness. For example, velvety curtains and a fluffy carpet go well with this. On the other hand, scatter cushions with a smooth structure look cool and are a good match for airy curtains and refined parquet.

Step 3: Combine sizes

It would be dull if everything was the same. This also applies to decorative cushions. If you are putting together scatter cushions of different sizes, your cushion landscape will then have more depth, structure and naturalness. It’s like with a skyline: If the heights and shapes of the buildings are all the same, it looks as monotone as a high-rise housing estate. Buildings of different heights and breadths, on the other hand, give the silhouette a lively and unmistakeable look.

Step 4: Decide on the number of decorative cushions

How many cushions are enough depends on the size of the room. On the one hand, it depends on the size of the item of furniture where the cushions should sit. This means: the larger the piece of furniture, the more cushions. As a rule of thumb: odd numbers look harmonious and natural, even numbers look strict and well-ordered.

For a lively look on a normal sofa, three or five sofa cushions are ideal. A large, dignified corner sofa can also take seven boho cushions, whereas an armchair will look good with a single decorative cushion.

Step 5: Arranging decorative cushions

How you arrange your decorative cushions depends on how many you have. The classic way to decorate is to move from outside in, with the large decorative cushions on the outside and the small scatter cushions in the middle. However, the patterns and motifs on the cushions have a part to play. The casually sophisticated charm of the boho cushions can certainly stand up to a wild and seemingly random arrangement. Strong geometric patterns, on the other hand, are shown off to exciting effect in an asymmetrical arrangement.

Interior design tip: Combine decorative cushions with style

Decorative cushions are usually already part of an existing ambience. In a way, your decor already determines the choice of decorative cushions. But that doesn't mean there's only one way to combine decorative cushions with your style. Here are a few tips:

Tone-on-tone decorative cushions

This is the classic way to achieve perfect harmony. It is especially important to coordinate the decorative cushions with the colours of the place you want to decorate with the cushions. With a sofa, this will be the sofa itself, and perhaps any checked fabrics, wallpaper and curtains or drapes. If you want to put decorative cushions in your bedroom, the colours should match your bedlinen and if available, the headboard or canopy.

Set contrasts with decorative cushions

The opposite approach brings exciting accents into your home. You could combine dark scatter cushions with a light bedroom. Or perhaps colourful sofa cushions with a grey sofa? Playing with complementary contrasts is so exciting. These are the colours which lie at opposite ends of the colour wheel, for example, red and green or yellow and purple. Bluish green and reddish orange also provide a noticeable cold/warm contrast.

Important: Don’t overdo it. The accent will have the best effect if this element is much smaller with regard to quantity. We also call it the quantity contrast.

Long-term furniture vs. flexible cushions

We don’t buy a new sofa every year. Most people are, therefore, careful when choosing the colour. You can’t go wrong with beige, grey or brown. After all, you are trying to achieve a ‘timeless’ look.
Decorative cushions are much more flexible. You can, therefore, break up more discreet colour schemes very easily. Decorative cushions in lilac and yellow with a grey sofa – bam! If you’ve had enough of them, simply replace the colourful cushion covers. For example, switch them for ton-sûr-ton (tone on tone) boho cushions, with a slightly playful pattern. This way you will create a contrast, but a more gentle one.

Decorative cushion sets and combinations

Our various decorative cushions from the same set guarantee harmonious diversity. For example the ‘Relax’ range in the Bleu, Fougère and Nature variants. You can also combine the sofa cushion sets with one another. For example, ‘Relax’ goes well with ‘Paris’.

Decorative cushions, coordinated with wallpapers and canvas pictures

If you have the opportunity to redesign your rooms completely, you will, of course, have other options. The decorative cushions from our ‘Metropolitan Stories 2’ collection are perfect to pair with the matching wallpaper.

For example, hang wallpaper item no. 378644 on your right-hand living room wall and then put the matching cushion near the opposite wall on a rocking chair. Then add a canvas picture with a skyline as a fitting commentary, like our picture DD120438. This is how to create a perfectly coordinated ambience.

Which decorative cushions suit me?

When you get home, you’ll experience a feeling of total well-being. Everything should fit together: the furniture, the wallpaper and, of course, the decorative cushions. If you know your interior design type, it’s pretty simple. If you don’t, here are a few tips.

Decorative cushions for the pure type

If you like clear shapes and lines, you will find too much colour distracting. Single-colour sofa cushions are, therefore, a good choice for you. If you choose scatter cushions, make sure they have clear lines and geometric patterns.
We recommend our Silence decorative cushion range with discreet single colours and smooth textures. Our cushion covers from the ‘River’ range with their visible weave structure will appeal to you. You might also be interested in the ‘Copenhagen’ cushion covers. They are inspired by the classic Scandinavian design of the 1960s and 1970s.

Decorative cushions for the retro design type

The boundaries of the pure type may be fluid: Clean lines are also the order of the day in retro design. It’s just a clear design. Decorative cushions from the ‘Copenhagen’ range mentioned above may also work with your style.
Going back even further, to the 1920s, is our ‘Rays New York’ decorative cushion set from the ‘Metropolitan Stories II’ range. As with all of the cushions in this range, at tapetenshop.de you will also find wallpaper to match.

Decorative cushions for the romantic country house style

You like things to be cosy, love floral patterns and muted, natural colours with only a few very colourful accents? Then the romantic style is perfect for you. Our 45x45 ‘Amsterdam’ cushion cover could, therefore, be exactly what you’re looking for. Our Cherry Blossom range is a little breezier, and ideal for fresh sofa cushions for springtime.

Decorative cushions for the romantic seaside style

Do you dream of having a house by the sea rather than in the countryside? You love seafaring accessories and find flotsam and jetsam from the beach fascinating? Then you will probably like our multitude of decorative cushions with maritime motifs, for example, the ‘Anchor’ cushion cover. You may also like our ‘Koi’ range. Just like our understated ‘Linn’ range, it might remind you of hazy days at the beach.

Decorative cushions for the boho style

You have no interest in perfection, love daydreaming and you’re happy to mix new things with visibly used things? Then Boho is clearly your cushion type. Presumably you know exactly what’s in your design. Perhaps you like our scatter cushion range ‘Marrakech’ which is based on classic carpet patterns, amongst other things. If you have a more metropolitan outlook: The ‘London’ range, with a dignified, velvety feel and washed-out embellishments, is ideal for big-city bohemians.

Which decorative cushion colours suit me?

Have you ever had a colour consultation done, for example, in a make-up studio or during a style consultation? Then you will know your colour type and we won’t have anything new to tell you. You will be making your choice of decorative cushions with a great sense of style, in that case. If not, here’s a brief overview.

Your colour type, your decorative cushion colour

Colour types are split by season:
The spring type has a light, delicate complexion, sometimes with freckles, light hair colour with golden to reddish highlights and light green to light brown eyes. For example, they suit the colours lime green, champagne, honey, turquoise, aquamarine, apricot, salmon red, poppy red and gold. For this type, the ‘River’ sofa cushion in fern or the decorative cushion ‘Strahlen New York’ in gold is suitable.
The autumn type has a golden, rosy complexion, perhaps with freckles too. Autumn types have reddish brown, red or perhaps mid- to dark blond hair with a golden sheen. Their eye colour is brown or green. This type suits rust red, copper red, chestnut red, olive green, fir green, golden beige, fawn brown, chocolate brown, mustard yellow, petrol blue and copper. Harmonious choices for them could include the Boho cushion ‘London’ in Pebble or the ‘River’ sofa cushion in Sea.

How do I look after my decorative cushion?

Dust, dirt and age are the greatest opponents of beauty. At least that’s the case for decorative cushions. The good news: You can do something to beat the first two opponents without having to buy a new decorative cushion.

  • Remove dust on a regular basis. Dust makes your decorative cushions look grey and tired. So remove dust from them regularly. Simply beat the dust out of them, ideally in the fresh air. You can also use your vacuum cleaner for this. Use the hoover’s upholstery brush for best results.
  • Washing cushion covers: All cushion covers for our decorative cushions hold their shape and colour and are machine washable. Please remove the cushion filling first before washing. For synthetic fibres, a water temperature of 30 degrees is generally recommended. You will find the exact washing instructions on the product. Tip: Polyester cushion covers do not build up static electricity when you use fabric softener
  • To dry them, the best thing to do is to wrap the cushion cover in a towel and let them dry horizontally. Most of our decorative cushions are not suitable for the dryer.
  • It may be possible to remove stubborn stains, for example, oil or blood, with a special stain remover from the chemist. Important: Do not use bleach. Consult the manufacturer’s instructions to find out which products are suitable for which stains and fabrics. Tip: Test the product in advance on a less visible area of the cushion cover, e.g. inside at the edge. If you are unsure, you can take it to a dry-cleaner. Most of our cushion covers are suitable for chemical cleaning.
  • Washing cushion fillings. You can simply machine wash the cushion filling, which is also sometimes called inlet. All you need to do is to open the zip in the cushion cover and remove the cushion filling. It will also be nice and fluffy after washing and drying. Please always take note of the washing instructions. You will find them sewn into the cushion filling. Important: Always wash cushion covers and cushion filling separately.
