And here’s how to hang these new wallpapers on your wall

Wallpaper meets photographic design

Forget everything you know about normal wallpaper and discover new possibilities when it comes to wall design. That’s because ‘The Wall’ wallpapers are more than just patterned wallpapers; they break down boundaries and create their very own large images on the wall. Unlike standard wallpapers, there is no repeating design; instead, there is a large image motive extending over several strips and transforming your wall into a work of art.

Trendy wallpapers in the Metropolitan Style

These exclusive motifs make you yearn for your very own new world of interior design. The large format digital print motifs will give you breathtaking scenes on your wall of the best quality. Processing the wallpaper is also very simple – one motif on a roll can be easily cut into strips and hung on the wall with no problems, thanks to the labelling and numbering. The high-quality non-woven backing also makes processing the product very safe and guarantees the best results for your wallpapering project.

Instead of a poster, you can now use the design to decorate the whole wall in an XXL format, making it an eye-catching feature for the room. Like photo wallpapers, motif wallpapers also conjure up large images on the wall but also offer the option of wallpapering them multiple times or as individual panels between matching plain wallpapers. Panel wallpapers pretty much represent the point where patterned wallpaper and photo wallpaper intersect, offering you an even more varied room design.

Variety and inspiration

Depending on which ‘The Wall’ motif wallpapers you have selected, you can not only hang the motif as a whole and in the recommended sequence; some walls can be wallpapered as individual strips and distributed around the wall or in the room. These motif wallpapers are ideally combined with neutral plain wallpapers, which recall the colour of the motif. Individual panels are particularly popular to split rooms up into certain zones, for example, in kids’ rooms between the snuggle area and the play area.

Instead of individual strips, you can also repeat the motifs on panel wallpapers endlessly; this provides a complete look for the room or for a long wall, particularly for the colourful motif wallpapers. For example, design the entire guest bathroom with a floral panel or transform your hallway with a continuous stone wall mural.

The intersection of wallpaper and photo wallpaper is also ideal for emphasising a wall niche or ledge. Thus, an architectural peculiarity becomes a special eye-catching feature that gives character to your room.

Format and dimensions

Unlike standard wallpapers, which are supplied in the standardised format, the Euro roll, motif wallpapers are different as they come in individual dimensions.

The designs come in two variations, as a 3-strip or 7-strip motif. The strip width is 53 cm, and the motif height is 2.8 m, and is, therefore, high enough for the average room height. The varying number of strips will be decided based on the running length of the roll and the surface area that you can wallpaper using this roll.

You only need to buy one roll for the entire motif. If you want to line up the motif in a sequence, simply buy enough rolls to fully wallpaper your wall. If your wall is smaller than the maximum measurement for 3- or 7-panel wallpapers, you can simply cut off the excess, meaning that the wallpaper also fits in a room with lower ceiling heights.

Before ordering your new wallpaper, measure your wall or the room so that you can buy the right number of rolls of wallpaper. You should also think about the other walls in the room and match a suitable patterned wallpaper or single-colour wallpaper in the correct style.

1) Tools and preparation

Before getting started with your wallpapering project, you should acquire the right tools and prepare and check the surface that you need to wallpaper. You don’t need much to hang the wallpaper, but essential items include a cutting knife or scissors, a spirit level and a pen, a paste roller, paste and a bucket, plus a spatula.

The wall to be wallpapered needs to be smooth and dry. It must also be absorbent so that the paste can hold. If you want to want to learn more about the right surface preparation, then take a look at our advice pages or contact our advice team if you have any specific questions.

2) Cutting

Once all the preparation has been done, you can get started. First of all, cut the motif wallpaper strips to size, then simply roll the roll up bit by bit and divide the strips into the white spaces between the motifs. Leave the light surplus on the motif strips first; with the numbering, you can keep an eye on the correct order.

Use a spirit level and a pencil to draw a vertical line on the wall to align the wallpaper. Wallpaper from left to right, draw your guide line so that you can stick the 1st panel to the left of it and the 2nd panel to the right.

3) Stick on the wallpaper and press on

Once you have stirred the wallpaper paste – take a look at the instructions on the packet – you can get started with pasting the wall. This technique is called the paste-the-wall technique and is used for all non-woven wallpapers. You will find a more extensive description on our advice page.

Fundamentally, you paste the wall with the paste a little wider than the strip width. Take the first strip of wallpaper and stick it on from top to bottom and along the guide line, press the back of the non-woven wallpaper flat into the layer of paste and try to avoid air pockets. Once the strip is on the wall, you can correct and perfect the alignment if necessary. Using a clean spatula, press down the wallpaper again and carefully work any excess paste or any air pockets out in the direction of the edge of the wallpaper. Once you’ve hung the first strip, continue in the same way one strip at a time: Paste the wall, stick on the strip and press on.

4) Trim the overhang

Once the first strips have been hung, you should then use a sharp blade and the spatula to cut the wallpaper back in the corners and by the floor. To do this, you simply have to press the wallpaper to the transition angle with the spatula and use the blade to cut above the edge of the spatula.

Once you have cut the overhangs, the wallpaper now just needs to dry out. Ensure that the paste has enough time to create a strong bond between the wall and the wallpaper; you should avoid draughts at all costs, and you should ensure that the room temperature is constant and not too high.

You will find all of the information about wallpapering on the inserts in each roll of wallpaper. If you’d prefer to watch a video than read about it, you will find all you need to know about hanging non-woven wallpapers in our how-to video.
